NAACP Leader Denounces Slots
posted 11:12 am Mon October 29, 2007 - BALTIMORE
Maryland NAACP president Jenkins Odoms says legal slot machines in the state would be devastating for low-income people.
He says slot machines would bring crime and addiction and do nothing for the community. The comments came Sunday, one day after the state NAACP concluded its annual conference in Ocean City.
Governor Martin O'Malley outlined proposals Friday to allow up to 15,000 slot machines statewide. The proposal calls for slots venues in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Cecil County, Worcester County and the state-owned Rocky Gap Lodge in Allegany County.
O'Malley proposals would let legislators decide or put to question to a referendum.
